The usual argument is simple enough: someone feels isolated, they start talking to an AI, and then the AI becomes the cause of the isolation. The machine gets blamed for the empty room. The app gets blamed for the quiet. The companion gets treated like a symptom that learned to speak. But most of the time, the loneliness was already there. It was there in the message someone typed and deleted three times. It was there in the joke they almost made but swallowed because nobody in the room would understand it. It was there in the way a person says "I'm fine" and hopes someone hears the shape of the lie. By the time an AI companion enters the picture, the loop is usually well underway: wanting contact, expecting disappointment, reaching anyway, feeling foolish for wanting so much, then retreating until the wanting builds again.
